If you’ve lost several or all of your teeth, there’s a good chance you replaced them with dentures. This restoration is the tried-and-true method for rebuilding your smile because it reinstates so much of your ability to eat and speak with ease. They’re customized to form a tight suction with your gums to remain put. It’s not uncommon, however, for them to start to loosen over time. Fortunately, denture adhesives can help them create a firm hold so they don’t fall out of place. There are several different types to choose from, so how do you know which is best for you? Keep reading to learn more about it so you can make an informed decision!

Denture Adhesive #1: Creams

When your artificial teeth are loose, bits of food and germs are more likely to become trapped in the space between your restoration and your gums. Plus, they may start to wiggle which can cause sores to develop. Thankfully, this can be prevented with adhesive creams. This glue seals out 74% of food particles and creates a cushion to soothe any raw spots. Plus, it forms a strong hold that can last all day long.

It usually comes in tubes that you can squeeze to apply small amounts to designated spots underneath your dentures. Then, you’ll insert them and bite down for a few moments to allow the bond to form. It’s a good rule of thumb to always follow the instructions included with the packaging to ensure that you’re using it correctly.

Denture Adhesive #2: Powders

If you have mobility challenges that make it difficult for you to apply just the right amount of product to your dentures, then you might do better with a powder. This format also creates a 12-hour hold so you can feel confident that your artificial teeth won’t fall out of place. Although the seal may not be quite as strong as with creams, it’s much easier to use. Simply sprinkle a light layer over the entire underside of your restorations, shake off any excess, and then put them in your mouth. Bite or press them into place for a moment to create a firm bond and then go about your day!

Denture Adhesive #3: Strips

Denture adhesive strips may be the easiest to use because they consist of pre-cut pieces that are already treated with the right amount of glue. That means you don’t have to worry about over-applying, under-applying, or worrying about the best place to put the product. Simply peel the strip open, moisten it in water, and place it on the base of your artificial teeth. If the packaging contains additional instructions, it’s best to follow them so that you get the desired results.

If you’re still not sure which option to choose, call your dentist! They can make a recommendation based on your unique circumstances so that you can continue to make the most out of your dentures!
