Woman brushing her teeth.Brushing at least twice per day and flossing at least once is truly the cornerstone of healthy teeth. However, are there other steps you could be taking to improve your oral health? Are there other products that might benefit your teeth and mouth? Your dentist explains the steps you can take to make the most of your home care routine and protect your oral health.

Antibacterial Mouth Rinse

Adding an antibacterial mouth rinse to your home care routine is a quick and effective way to give your teeth the added protection from tooth decay and cavities. Be sure to consult your dentist on which rinse is right for your needs. Some aren’t as effective and may not achieve your desired results.

Electric Toothbrushes

If you haven’t already, you might consider switching to an electric toothbrush. Most electric toothbrushes these days are smart brushes, which mean they let you know if you’re applying too much pressure or how long you’ve been brushing. They also do the hard work for you. Hygienists report less plaque buildup between visits with patients using an electric brush as opposed to a manual one.

Drink More Water

Limiting your consumption of sugary beverages can greatly reduce your risk of developing issues like tooth decay and cavities. Many beverages such as colas are sugary and acidic, which is double whammy for your teeth and the perfect recipe for tooth decay. Drinking more water not only hydrates your body, but also washes away food debris and protects your teeth from decay.

Eat More Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and veggies are good for your health; however, did you know that they’re also great for your oral health too? This is because they neutralize the acids in your mouth that eat away at your enamel and cause cavities. They also increase saliva flow, which helps to wash away food particles and debris. The next time you need an afternoon snack, reach for fruits or vegetables.

Routine visits with your dentist every six months are also critical for achieving and maintaining optimum oral health. Have you scheduled your next appointment with your family dentist?
